Wow one week of holidays has passed very quickly!! It passed so quickly that I almost lost count of the days. Everyday, I just know where I am going to, who I am meeting and what we are going to do, without being very sure about what day it was or the date. Once exams are over, dates don't really matter anymore, only the plans matter. Fortunately, I am one of those whose exams did not drag for a long period of time. There are quite a number of NTU students who just had their last paper today!
By the way, I had a haircut today! Hm, no picture to show yet though. For those who saw my new haircut, they think that I look different. It has been many years since I last had a short fringe and I was not quite used to the new look at first. Haha I could not help but keep checking my hair in the mirror and adjusting my fringe. But luckily I received some comments that somewhat reassure me abit more about my haircut.
Yesterday I came across some interesting findings...
Finding #1 : Pirates in reality
There was a report about a super huge oil tanker carrying crude oil worth of US $100million being hijacked by PIRATES! There are still real pirates in this era?? I always thought that pirates only exist in the past, like those depicted by Pirates of the Carribean. The report described the pirates as violent and powerful. They would use small speedboats to chase after large ships and when they succeed, they would climb up using ropes and usually they are heavily armed. One captain even lamented that they have to look out all the time for such small speedboats and try to shake them off their heels.
Finding #2 : Maldives sinking
Ok, this is not what I found out yesterday but one week back or so. It was reported that Maldives is sinking (not really surprising since sea levels are rising) and the government has already started looking for land in other countries for them to move over ( this is surprising!). Imagine moving a whole country's population over to another place! At the rate that they are sinking, they calculated that it will be less than 100 years that their island will be under the sea. Hence, their government plans to put aside some tourism revenue for buying land in probably Australia or Sri Lanka. Wow a country within another country.
Finding #3 : Job Prospect
A graduate from double major of psychology and social work wrote in to the papers asking for career advice. She graduated a few years back and has tried working as a private tutor and social worker before but she does not want to work in those fields anymore. She was thinking whether she should pursue another degree that is more practical. The advisor advised her not to pursue another degree and instead she should aim to write a good CV and master her communication skills for interviews. She explained that arts courses train undergraduates in analytical skills and critical thinking, which are applicable to jobs in many sectors. Sounds promising but I still don't know my direction. Yes, there may not be a specific sector but what are the kinds of jobs we can have?
Finding #4 : Sociological Thinking
In the same issue of newspaper, a reporter was writing a column about tourists busy snapping their digital cameras when on holidays. His point was that tourists should not be busy snapping their digital cameras because they would be able to find better photos of those scenes on internet and they would miss out the best part when they are busy snapping away. Instead, he suggested that tourists should enjoy the moment fully and have a remarkable experience. There was this part whereby I think that he would make a good Soci student (wonder whether was he one before). He said that digital camera is a powerful tool. Not only that it itself is powerful in capturing special moments, more importantly it empowers the photographer who gets to decide which part of reality is being captured and what is not. Good point.
Yeah!!!!! Exams are finally over!!!
Haha I am so glad that it's all over! No more assignments to rush, no more worries about tutorials and no more studying at RP or library for the next one month!
Reflections about exams...I did not do well for my soci papers...had not enough time for 312 and did not know how to do the 40marks question for 301. Luckily CS and TCM were alright. Nothing interesting happened during this sem's exams as well. Haha profs were quite normal this time round.
Anyway, after our exams on Wednesday, Wei Ching, Esther, Denise, Seng Keat and I went for early dinner at HK cafe and a movie at Cine. Esther taught us some games after our meals and we had a fun time playing those games. We wanted to watch Sing to the Dawn at first but it received poor ratings and hence we watched Tropic Thunder instead. Haha it was a wise choice. The movie was super hilarious, right from the start till the very end! However, I think the movie has been screening for quite some time already and as a result, we were assigned a small theatre that has a spoilt chair in between me and Denise. Oh! The lead actor was Ben Stiller! Haha and there was Tom Cruise who did not look the least bit like him. Haha the image of him dancing is still vivid in my mind.
What a spread! We miss all these good food alot!
Wei Ching and Esther!
Deja vu!! Haha the picture above was taken on Wednesday at the SAME SEAT as the picture below which was taken one year ago.
Yesterday, together with Denise, Ben and Andy, we went to watch Madagascar 2 at Cine. It's another comedy but with some typical morale behind it. I would say that it's a funny and sweet movie. After the movie, we walked around, had dinner and went to Marina. Oh! By the way, this year's X'MAS lightings are really beautiful! The theme is sweet christmas and it's really sweet! Haha anyway, after watching F1 races, me and Ching always wanted to play Daytona but we did not had the chance to play together YET. Haha to curb the craving first, I suggested playing Daytona and guess what...I came in 2nd!! Anyway, we wanted to walk to Marina Barrage but we did not know how to go. In the end, we ended up at the Singapore Flyer. Hm, I think that the place is nothing special, just another tourist attraction. But of course, it may be a different story when you are taking a ride on the Singapore Flyer.
Alright, that's all. I need to clear my sleeping debt soon...
Yesterday we watched a video during our lecture for gender and sexuality. It was about the Samsui women in Singapore and how immigration and gender intersects to bring about some impacts on the women. Although the video was only 20 plus minutes, I think it reallly provides an insight into the lives of these women.
Before the video, I did not really know who the Samsui women are. I only knew that they wear red headgear with blue outfits. That's all. Apparently they are women who mostly came from a place called Samsui and they travelled to Singapore either in search of better life or having some family problems back home. The red gear is to protect them and because it is an outstanding colour, they could be identified easily. The video showed them working in construction sites without any gloves or boots! That's super dangerous. When they have bruises from carrying the heavy cement or bricks, they would not see a doctor as they can't afford it. Even if they stepped onto a nail, they did not seek any doctor's advice too! They would use some folklore remedies such as garlic.
While watching the video, I fet quite sad, especially when they interviewed the women who were in their 80s when it was being recorded. Each of them have their own sad life story. Now, they live in small flat units with their fellow Samsui friends and I think its really heart-wrenching when you see them getting old and lonely. They had nothing much to do and most of the time they would just sit around and wait for time to pass. Some of them even carried on working as Samsui women till their 70s. I think these women have become a long-forgotten part of Singapore's history. Before foreign workers came, they were the ones who did the construction work for us!
I have been busy with assignments recently. Endless stream of assignments...sian. It will only end on 11 Nov, ONE day before my exams! Crazy right?
Anyway, last night was the final race of this F1 season, Brazil Grand Prix. Everything was just so drama last night. Haha just 5 to 10 minutes before the race was supposed to start, the online channel stopped streaming. Haha I got anxious and started looking for alternative channels and when I found it, I sent it to Ching as well and she sent me another link at the same time too haha.
Finally, the race started and I was hoping that Kimi Raikkonen would win the race. I was impressed by him during the previous race when he gave way for his fellow teammate Massa to overtake him. I think that its applaudable that he cared more about the team than his own individual merit. It's all about teamwork! And I was also hoping that Massa would win the race instead of Hamilton because I think the latter is quite arrogant. But! It did not turned out as I had wished. Sad. But I guess the racer who is most upset has to be Coulthard. It was his last race for his whole career and yet he was knocked out at the first turn. Somemore it was not his fault lah. Someone just came to knock onto him and yet the one who knocked onto him managed to carry on with the race. Super unlucky.
