Haha think I am getting lazy to blog recently. I am blogging now because I have some time before I go for a welcome tea in school.
Hm, I have a premonition that this sem will be horrible. There are so many assignments to do and the profs are getting more demanding! Haha think its because we are taking level 300 subjects ba. They expect more from us, the word count for assignments has gone up, the number of assignments has gone up as well and not to mention the number of readings. I would say that the worst part is that the assignments are no longer the same. It's more of pre-FYP kind of thing. And it's only week 2!!!!
Anyway, on a happier note, people go watch Olympics! Haha that's the only thing that I catch on TV these days. There are so many events going on and so much excitement lah. But too bad I could only catch glimpse of the action now and then. Before I leave my house, the games would not have started and by the time I reached home the games would have ended. But still, I would try to catch it on TV Mobile and also some repeat telecast haha.
Hm, some updates since my last entry. I went to NDP on Sat with Ben, QB, Eugene, EK, Seet and her family. Thanks to Seet who managed to get so many tickets!! The show was alright. I think the highlight was the Black Knights display. We took some photos but I have not got them from Loong Ee. Hm, on monday went for dim Sum buffet with QB, Andy, Jiyong and Esther. It was at this hotel near Peninsular plaza. Hm, the service was slow and the food were quite oily. Haha the hotel somehow reminded me of Baiyoke Sky in Bangkok, abit run-down. After the buffet, Esther and I wanted to catch a movie but the queues were super long! It's really crazy! As if there are some freebies giveaway. Hm, tues to tmr will be school and welcome teas. I am quite looking forward to tmr's welcome tea. Haha it has been quite some time since I last saw my OVE friends. We are going to do the cultural performance again!
Alright, c'est tout (that's all)! I am missing French!!
Sabaidee!!!!!! (Hello)
It's only been 2 days since I came back and I am missing the kids there already!! I miss the slow pace of the life in Laos too. I miss lying down near the Mekong river and chat. But I don't miss the cold shower though haha.
Alright, let me share some of the things that I could recall happening in the trip. Hm, I would say that Vientiane, the capital of Laos is a quieter version of Thailand. They do have proper roads and concrete buildings, just that the buildings are all very low. The streets are quite empty, even on a weekend. We spent around 7 days there doing construction and teaching in a high school. Oh! Everyday we take tuk tuk to the school and by the end of the ride, our hair would be very stiff and tangled because of the dust and dirt.
The first 2 nights that we were there, I went drinking beer laos with some friends at the Mekong riverside. Beer laos is very popular over there. I think that is the most common drink there. Across the Mekong river and it is Thailand! I was super shocked when I heard that! Its so near! On our last night, we went to the Mekong riverside again for dinner with some Laos friends. The food is really delicious! Sap!(Laos word for delicious) When we bade goodbye to the kids at the high school, the kids cried and some of us too. I didn't, though tears welled up.
The village stay was really an experience of a lifetime. We stayed with those families that are richer because their houses are made up of concrete walls and they have proper toilets. There was no water heater though. We had to wash ourselves using buckets of water. Every morning, you would hear roosters croaking and cows were my neighbours. I quite like the cows though. I was always curious about them, looking where were they going etc haha. My hosts told me that it's the first time that foreigners popped by. Hence, alot of people came to look at us during our stay there. My hosts are a loving family with 2 sons. We taught them some poker card games which they enjoy alot. They are very hospitable! They would buy white rice for us hoping that we will eat more, although it costs double the price of their sticky rice. When we bade goodbye to our hosts, I cried. I was holding back my tears until I saw my host wiping away her tears, at that moment, I could not hold it back anymore. They really treat us like family!
When I heard that some kids walk around half an hour to one hour just to come to school, I was really touched. They really put in an effort to come to school. It was not compulsory for them at all. They chose to do it! Most of them did not have uniforms, they wore tattered clothes. Their slippers exposed their feet to mud and dust. It was really touching. How fortunate are we!
Alright, enough of me saying. Here's a sneak preview of some photos taken. I will upload more photos after I get the whole compilation of the photos.
The girl at the extreme left drew a picture for me and gave it to me!
The boy above is my fave kid no. 1! Kopfe! His eyelashes are super long lah! Haha there was once whereby he was sitting on my lap and I saw that his fingernails were black. Hence I pointed to his fingernails and said dirty. He stood up and walked away. I thought he did not want to care about what I said. But I continued looking where he was going. In the end, I saw him picking up a stick to dig the dirt out from his fingernails. After he was done, he came back. He's so cute!!
Us with 2 walls that we did! Proud of our work! We are sensitive to bricks and cement now haha.
Isn't she pretty? I think Laos have alot of pretty girls.
My fave kid no. 2! Pinky! She's very pretty and cute! Her younger sister is very cute too. Although I couldn't really speak with her, she would try to use body language or hand gesture to communicate with me. She always smile without showing her teeth when taking photos because her front teeth had decayed. Same for her sister. What a waste!
Elders group! I think the sky looks quite picturesque!
Some of us in front of the victory monument. We climbed to the top of it and the view was beautiful.
Spot me? Haha we were using some super big leaves to shelter us from the heat. Not very effective after a while.
Ya, our village is surrounded by tall mountains. In the morning, you could only see the clouds. In the afternoon, the clouds would give way to the mountains.
Cute little girls! They are always hanging out together.
Taken at the school in the village. It was raining almost everyday and hence the place was very muddy. We even had a "mud spa" on our last night haha. Oh ya! I did a body massage and a foot masage at the cities. It was good! I prefer foot massage though.
My host family with some of their neighbours. The boy behind me and the one on the extreme right are the sons of my host family.
My fave kid no. 3! Dui! He's very good-looking and cute! He's not photogenic though. There was once whereby me and another friend went to his house and it was quite warm. We took paper to fan ourselves and he saw that. He went to switch on the fan for us but it could not work. We told him it was okie in laos but he went on to switch on another fan that was further away from us. The fan worked but it was too far. Guess what he did? He plugged it out and carried it over to a switch nearer to us and switched it on for us! Oh my goodness! The fan was about the same height as him lah! It's not light! He's so sweet!!
This is the house that I stayed for 5days with another 3 girls.
Alright, that's all.
