Yesterday I read the Saturday Special and it was quite shocking and maddening. It was reported that in Hainan, the gender imbalance was bad, with 138 males to 100 females. For a country to have good gender balance, it is usually 107 to 100.
I was shocked to know that China prohibited gender ultrasound screening! I always assumed that this screening is a procedure that every parent would go through. But I was so wrong. However, before you start gasping and cursing the China's government, they have a good reason to do so. They do not allow doctors to reveal the gender of the foetus to their parents, for fear that they would abort the child if it was a girl. Sad to say, this does not deter the parents. They went on to bribe the doctors for as low as less than $50. The doctors would shake their heads if it was a girl and nod their heads if it was a boy. Some of them went on to abort the foetus once they knew it was a girl.
Sad isn't it? Is giving birth to a girl that horrible?
Apparently they thought so. When a woman gave birth to a boy, there will be laughter and congratulations. However, if it was a girl, there will not be any smiles. This reminds me of the drama serials that were set in the early 40's or 50's.
What makes me mad is that they treat girls like...shit. It seems like giving birth to a girl is like giving birth to a lump of shit that is so disgraceful. There were many parents who abandoned their baby girl on the streets as well. Is girl that inferior to boy? Yes, I understand that traditionally, boys are preferred over girls. But do they have to treat girls so badly?
And the thing is, there are so few women that many men are still bachelors. The few women who were born and raised mostly went to the cities area to look for jobs. They were saying that this may leads to bigger problems. The bachelors may turn to prostitutes, leading to increase in STDs and there may be a rise in bride trafficking. If I didn't remember wrongly, it was a sociologist who said that. I wonder if the people who detested girls so much had thought about these consequences.
Anyway...I got another job! Haha...this job was recommended by my friend again. She was the one who recommended me the MOM job as well. Haha must say that Priscilla has alot of lobangs. We will be starting on 18th July at Republic Poly. The 4 of us need to give out surveys, about 200 surveys in all. We will have 5 days to do it. Its hourly rated. Haha the pay sounds good as well.
